The
Historic Distillery District is Toronto's
newest arts and cultural community. Founded in 1932
by William Gooderham and James Worts, the Gooderham
and Worts Distillery was the largest in the British
Empire. Wonderfully preserved, the Victorian buildings
have been restored to immaculate condition, and are
a pleasure to tour. The area itself covers 13 acres
of downtown, and is home to many quaint restaurants,
cafes and art galleries.
The 44 buildings hold more then 100 small businesses
including art galleries, bakeries, a microbrewery,
performance venues and non-profit arts organizations.
There are guided tours and history lessons to take
in, or you can freely wander around and take in the
sights as you please. Definite highlights include
the Mill Street Brewery and the Pure
Spirits Oyster House & Grill.
Easily accessible by public transportation, the Distillery
Districts cobblestone streets are located
just east of downtown by Parliament Street at 55 Mill
Street. You can learn more about the areas exciting
history by visiting www.thedistillerydistrict.com
or calling (416) 364 1177. This quaint area is worth
the time it takes to explore very nook and cranny.
